Some of the best travel finds aren’t the destination — they’re the stop-off you almost drove past. Salamanca was exactly that for us: a couple of hours built into the drive home from Portugal that turned into one of the standout moments of the whole trip.
Easy to Reach, Easy to Park
Salamanca sits conveniently on the route back, and getting into the town couldn’t have been simpler. We found a free car park right on the edge of the town centre — no circling for a space, no complicated parking apps, just park up and walk straight into the old town within a few minutes.
A Medieval Town That Blew Us Away
We weren’t expecting much beyond a leg-stretch and a coffee. What we got instead was genuinely spectacular. Salamanca is home to the oldest university in Spain, and the old town wears that history beautifully — golden sandstone buildings, grand squares, and a medieval feel that’s hard to find so well preserved elsewhere.
The Hunt for the Hidden Frog
Every good old town needs a bit of a game, and Salamanca delivers one in style: somewhere on the ornate façade of the university building, carved into the stonework, sits a tiny hidden frog. Local legend has it that spotting it brings good luck — and finding it kept the whole family thoroughly occupied, necks craned, scanning every inch of carved detail for a good while. A small thing, but exactly the kind of detail that makes a place stick in a 10-year-old’s memory.
A Drink at the Irish Theatre Bar
Before heading back to the car, we stopped for a quick drink at the Irish Theatre Bar — a striking-looking spot housed in what was once a theatre. It’s fair to say it’s a place with more style than substance; the setting is the real draw rather than anything remarkable about the drinks themselves. Still, worth a visit for the setting alone if you’re passing.
Worth a Weekend, Not Just a Stop-Off
Two hours in Salamanca was nowhere near enough. What started as a convenient break in a long drive turned into one of those “we need to come back properly” moments — this is a town that deserves a full weekend, not a fleeting glimpse. If you’re ever driving between Portugal and central Spain, it’s well worth building in more time than we did.
