Ferme Ithurburia: A Last-Minute Find That Turned Out to Be a Gem

The best travel finds are sometimes the ones you weren’t looking for.

We’d been let down by an Airbnb host mid-afternoon — the kind of situation where you suddenly need somewhere to sleep that evening and you need it fast. We were coming back from Portugal and Spain, crossing into France near the northern Pyrenees, and the clock was ticking. A quick search on Booking.com — which has never let us down in a last-minute pinch — and Ferme Ithurburia appeared.

We almost didn’t click on it. We did. We’re very glad we did.

What it is

Ferme Ithurburia is a century-old working farmhouse sitting on the Route Napoléon, just four kilometres from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French Basque Country. The name means something close to “the farm at the crossroads” in Basque, and it feels like exactly that — a place where different kinds of travellers converge. Pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago pass through here regularly; so do families driving through the Pyrenees; so, apparently, do road-tripping families who found themselves needing a bed at short notice on a Tuesday afternoon.

The four bedrooms are set upstairs in the old farm building, with mezzanine levels, private bathrooms, and covered galleries that open onto a mountain view that makes you forget you were stressed an hour ago. There’s a family room sleeping five, three triple rooms with shower, free parking, and WiFi. For a group or a bigger family, it’s genuinely hard to find better value in a setting like this.

What we thought

Mountain views, comfortable rooms, great continental breakfast, and hosts who clearly care about the place. We came in frazzled and left rested. That is the best thing a stopover can do for you.

The location is also genuinely interesting beyond the stay itself. Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is just down the road — a beautiful medieval town and the traditional starting point for the French route of the Camino — and the Pyrenean scenery on the Route Napoléon is some of the finest mountain driving you will find anywhere in Europe. If you are making your way between Spain and France by road, this stretch is worth taking slowly.
