Cinque Terre translates as five lands, and is a string of jewel like villages set against the rugged backdrop of the Liguria coastline.
Dating back to medieval times these five villages of colourful houses and vineyards seem to defy gravity as they cling to steep cliff-side terraces.
The harbours are filled with fishing boats and local trattorias turn out their seafood specialties along with the Liguria region’s famous pesto sauce.
The Sentiero Azzurro (blue path) is a precarious cliff-side hiking trail that links the villages and offers sweeping vistas.
The Cinque Terre is a stunning region on the Italian Riviera, consisting of five picturesque villages: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Monterosso al Mare, and Vernazza. Each of these towns boasts its own distinct character, yet they all share a deep connection with the Ligurian Sea, which has shaped their culture and lifestyle for centuries.
Riomaggiore, the southernmost village, is known for its colorful houses perched along steep cliffs and narrow alleys that descend toward the harbor. Manarola, another charming village, is famous for its vineyards and breathtaking views of the coastline. Corniglia, sitting atop a high cliff, offers a more tranquil atmosphere and a sense of seclusion, as it is the only village not directly on the water.
Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the five, is renowned for its sandy beaches and historic sites, such as the medieval Old Town. Vernazza, perhaps the most photographed, captivates visitors with its vibrant harbor and dramatic cliffs. Together, these five villages create a breathtaking tapestry of natural beauty and traditional Italian charm, making the Cinque Terre a must-visit destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure by the sea.
There are number of walking routes which now connect the Cinque Terre, although some routes, particularly the lower paths close to the sea, can be affected by landslides, unstable ground, urgent reconstruction work, etc., which may close them without any notice. There are plenty of alternative routes which take in the stunning vistas from atop the cliffs.

There is a small charge for walking most of the popular routes – and there is talk that numbers may be restricted in the future. This will be controlled by an app but details are not finalised.
