A dam good place in Goa

Selaulim Dam: A Hidden Gem in Goa

One of the challenges of exploring Goa is that some of its most beautiful sights remain hidden, off the beaten tourist paths, and navigating to them can be tricky. Tourist signposts are sparse, and even asking locals for directions can sometimes lead to a series of confusing turns and stops. In our own adventure, we set out looking for a place called Pala Farms, where we heard the children could enjoy horse-riding. But instead, we stumbled upon an unexpected gem—Selaulim Dam (also known as Salaulim Dam). Once we passed through the security checkpoint, we discovered one of the most stunning garden spaces we had ever seen in Goa.

A Beautiful Park Perfect for Families

The grounds around Selaulim Dam are impeccably maintained, offering a surprisingly clean and litter-free environment compared to other parks and gardens in Goa. The spacious area features a children’s play zone, perfect for families, as well as a dedicated picnic space. On the serene Sunday afternoon of our visit, we were surprised to find so few people around—perhaps the midday sun had kept the crowds at bay. It was a peaceful discovery, one that we plan to return to for another leisurely day in nature.

Spectacular Views from the Top

The highlight of Selaulim Dam is undoubtedly the view from the top. While the climb to the top of the dam can be a little tiring, especially in the heat of the early afternoon, the panoramic view makes every step worth it. The sight of the sprawling landscape, lush greenery, and the peaceful waters of the reservoir offers a breathtaking moment of tranquility. It’s a perfect place for a scenic photograph or simply to admire the beauty of Goa’s less-visited interior regions.

An Engineering Marvel and a Watering Hole for Nature Lovers

Aside from the beautiful gardens and recreational areas, the Selaulim Dam is also an engineering marvel. Completed in 2000, the dam serves as a vital source of irrigation and drinking water for much of southern Goa. The reservoir itself is vast, and during the monsoon season, the water levels rise dramatically, making the views from the top even more impressive. The dam’s unique, semi-circular, spillway design is fascinating to see, especially when water cascades over the edges during the rainy months.

For those interested in nature, the area around the dam is home to various bird species and other wildlife, making it a good spot for casual birdwatching or a quiet walk. The nearby forested areas also offer shade and a peaceful respite from the heat, adding to the charm of the location.

A Hidden Gem Worth Finding

Selaulim Dam may not be on the typical tourist itinerary, but it’s one of Goa’s hidden treasures. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful day out with family, a spot to relax in nature, or just somewhere to admire the scenic beauty and impressive engineering, Selaulim Dam is well worth the visit. Its serene atmosphere, combined with the breathtaking views and well-maintained surroundings, make it an unexpected delight for those willing to venture beyond Goa’s popular beaches and bustling markets.
