Top 5 Things to See and Do in Verona, Italy

If you’re dreaming of cobbled streets, ancient ruins, and a touch of romance, Verona is the perfect place for you. Known for its connection to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, this charming Italian city offers much more than just a tragic love story. Let me take you through the top five things to see and do in Verona that will make your visit unforgettable!

1. Visit Juliet’s Balcony

Let’s start with the most iconic spot in Verona—Juliet’s House (Casa di Giulietta). Even though Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a work of fiction, Verona has embraced the story, and visitors flock to see Juliet’s famous balcony. The house itself is a 14th-century building, and while you can stand on the balcony pretending you’re Juliet (calling for your Romeo below), the courtyard and the statue of Juliet are also worth a visit. Tradition has it that touching the statue brings luck in love—so why not give it a try?

Inside the house, you’ll find exhibits showcasing costumes and other items inspired by the play. And yes, you can even leave a love letter or message on the walls outside—just remember, it’s not exactly legal to write on the walls, but the idea of leaving messages has persisted for years!

2. Explore the Arena di Verona

You can’t visit Verona without stopping by the Arena di Verona. This Roman amphitheater, built in the first century, is one of the best-preserved in the world. While it’s similar to the Colosseum in Rome, the Arena in Verona is still used today for concerts and opera performances. If you can, try to catch a show during the Verona Opera Festival in the summer—there’s nothing quite like watching an opera under the stars in an ancient amphitheater!

Even if you’re not attending a performance, take a guided tour inside the Arena to get a sense of its grandeur. Imagine gladiators and Roman crowds filling the seats as you walk through the stone arches. It’s an amazing way to connect with Verona’s rich history.

3. Stroll Around Piazza delle Erbe

Piazza delle Erbe is the beating heart of Verona. This lively square is surrounded by historic buildings, cafes, and market stalls. The square itself dates back to Roman times, and today, it’s a perfect place to soak up the atmosphere of the city. Grab a coffee at a café, watch the world go by, and admire the stunning frescoed buildings that line the square.

Don’t forget to check out the Torre dei Lamberti, the tall clock tower overlooking the piazza. For a small fee, you can take an elevator (or climb the stairs if you’re feeling energetic) to the top for panoramic views of the city.

4. Cross Ponte Pietra and Visit Castel San Pietro

For one of the best views in Verona, take a walk across the Ponte Pietra, a Roman stone bridge that connects the historic center with the hill of Castel San Pietro. The bridge itself is a beautiful piece of history, with its arches dating back to 100 BC, though it was reconstructed after WWII.

Once you cross the bridge, head up to Castel San Pietro. You can walk up the hill (or take the funicular if you prefer an easy ride), and when you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Verona’s red rooftops and winding river. It’s a great spot to catch the sunset!

5. Marvel at the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore

Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Italy. The basilica, dedicated to Verona’s patron saint, San Zeno, is both beautiful and steeped in history. Inside, you’ll find an impressive bronze door and a crypt where, legend has it, Romeo and Juliet were married. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning frescoes make this a must-see for anyone interested in art and history.

So, whether you’re a history buff, a romantic, or just someone who loves exploring beautiful cities, Verona has something for everyone. From ancient ruins to timeless romance, Verona will steal your heart!

Bonus Visit: I’d be killed by my wife if I didn’t mention the Museo degli Affreschi where we were married many years ago.

The Museo degli Affreschi is a fascinating museum in Verona, dedicated to preserving beautiful frescoes from the city’s historical buildings. Located in the San Francesco al Corso complex, the museum showcases a variety of frescoes dating from the 12th to the 16th centuries, offering a glimpse into Verona’s artistic heritage. One of its most famous attractions is the Tomba di Giulietta (Juliet’s Tomb), adding a layer of Shakespearean romance to the experience. Whether you’re an art lover or a fan of literature, the Museo degli Affreschi provides an intriguing blend of history, culture, and beauty.
