Getting to grips with some of the Welsh place names can be challenging. And for most of our recent holiday, we were pronouncing Mwnt as Mwint. But as we were soon corrected; the ‘w’ should be pronounced ‘u’ – so it is, in fact, pronounced Munt.
Mwnt beach is a delightful spot located on the Cardigan coast of southwest Wales. The beach is located in a bay which is sheltered by rocky cliffs. Mwnt beach is looked after by the National Trust and members get free parking at the large car-park at the clifftop. The parking fee for non-members is £4 (as of 2020).
Located at the top of the steps which lead down to the beach are a cafe, shop and toilet. There are about 139 concrete steps down to the beach. Our group had an age range between 4 and 72 and everyone managed it without difficulty. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
The beach is protected on all sides by sloping cliff walls and the sea is generally safe for swimming. There is no lifeguard on duty. Dogs are not permitted on the beach between 1 May and 30 September. The beach does get quite busy in the summer months and the narrow road leading to the car park can get quite congested, particularly late afternoon as more visitors arrive to view the sunset.
There is a beautiful small white church located at the top of the cliff. This is thought to date back to the 13th century. The Ceredigion Heritage Coastal Path passes along the top of the cliff behind the beach and offers spectacular views of Cardigan Island and the rocky coastline.
The beach is family-friendly and a sun-trap in the late afternoon. When we visited the sea was calm enough for the safe use of kayaks and paddleboards.
